A strong document photo starts with a clean original image, the exact application profile, and the current instructions from the issuing authority.

01

The printed size is 2 × 2 inches

The current US passport photo specification is 2 × 2 inches, or 51 × 51 millimeters. The face and head must also sit within the official position and size ranges shown in the application guidance.

02

Use a plain white or off-white background

The background should be uniform and free of distracting objects or shadows. Create the correct lighting and background when taking the picture instead of relying on synthetic replacement.

03

Submit a recent, natural image

Use a current color photo that represents the applicant’s real appearance. Do not use beauty filters, eye redirection, facial reshaping, or other changes that alter identity.

04

Start with the original camera file

An original phone or camera file usually preserves more detail than a screenshot, social-media download, or image forwarded through a compressed message.

05

Choose the exact passport route

Adult, child, baby, renewal, printed, and online application routes can present different capture or upload instructions. Open the matching guide and then follow the current State Department instructions.

Always compare the photo and output with the current instructions from the issuing authority. Requirements and online application portals can change.
